The number of statistical regions was reduced from 6 to 5. Varakļāni municipality (Varakļānu novads) was merged into Madona municipality (Madonas novads).

The number of divisions is reduced from 119 to 42 by the municipal reform that comes into effect on 1 July 2021. Vangaži town moves to Ropažu novads. Aglonas novads is split: the eastern parishes move to Krāslavas novads and Aglona parish moves to Preiļu novads.

The Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia has published experimental statistics estimating the population of villages. »City Population« tabulates the 2018 estimates of all villages with at least 20 inhabitants in addition to the 2000 and 2010 census population.
